Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a procedure that helps relieve symptoms such as difficulty breathing through your nose, sinus infections, and nosebleeds (frequent or infrequent.) The first course of action is always a non-surgical approach, but when medical therapies do not stop these symptoms the problem may be physical. Septoplasty is a special type of surgery that repairs a deviated septum.

About the Procedure and Recovery

Nasal Septoplasty Sinus Surgery PlantationSeptoplasty is a surgical procedure that is minimally invasive and leaves no scar. This surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and access to the septum is through the nostrils so there is no incision and recovery time is also minimal. Most patients return to their normal lifestyle following septoplasty in just 24-hours. Pain, following surgery, is also minimal and can be alleviated with standard medication or a prescription for mild pain medicine.

The procedure only straightens the bone and cartilage so that the nasal passages are free of the obstruction caused by the sagging cartilage. A deviated septum occurs when the bones in the nasal passage shift. The result of that movement is that the cartilage that is supported by those bones sags or folds causing it to restrict airflow through the nostrils. By repositioning the bones, the septum regains its normal position and symptoms disappear.

Sedation and Postoperative Experiences

Patients are given local anesthesia in conjunction with I.V. sedation. Patients also have the option of receiving general anesthesia. The procedure is so simple that patients typically do not require nasal packing and most patients do not experience facial swelling or bruising. One complaint that some patients experience is postoperative congestion. If postoperative congestion occurs it is easy to manage using nasal spray. The result of the septoplasty surgery is that the nasal passages are completely open and the symptoms for the surgery relieved.
