Nasal Obstructions

If you’ve ever felt “congested” or unable to breathe properly through your nose, you have experienced a phenomenon referred to as nasal obstruction. You may feel this sensation on both sides of the nose or just one. In some cases, the “blocked” feeling will switch back and forth between both sides of the nose. There are many different causes of nasal obstruction.

Causes of Nasal Obstructions

Nasal Obstructions Plantation

Structural problems are the most common cause of nasal obstruction. Some examples of such structural problems include a deviated septum, nasal valve compromise, and turbinate obstruction. These structural problems result in the imbalance of the sides of the breathing passages. If you were not born with these structural issues, you may have gotten them from injury or trauma.

Of course, structural reasons are not the only cause of nasal obstructions. There are also medical reasons for the feeling of congestion. Some of these causes include allergies and chronic rhinosinusitis. If you’re unfamiliar with chronic sinusitis, this condition refers to when the sinuses become swollen and inflamed. This condition usually lasts about two months, even with treatment. The swollen and inflamed sinuses interfere with the process of drainage and cause mucus to accumulate in the nose. Nasal tumors and polyps can also cause congestion. However, this is incredibly rare.

Treatment Options

If a structural problem is causing your nasal obstruction, surgery is the only way to eliminate this issue in most cases. However, surgery is not always the best option. In some cases, it is better to use nasal sprays to decrease swelling within the nose and manage the symptoms associated with nasal obstruction.

Septoplasty surgery will straighten the cartilage and bone of the nose is managing the symptoms is insufficient. This surgery is not very invasive and scarring, swelling, and bruising is minimal. In most cases, you will not have to stay overnight after the surgery.
